Solved numerical of ch. 8 based on electricity

 1. An electrical appliance is rated as 60 watt - 150 volt.

a) what do you understand by this statement?

b) how much current will flow through the appliance when in use?

Ans. 1a. Electrical appliance is rated as 60 watt - 150 volt.

It means that if the appliance is used on a 150 volt supply the electric power consumed by it is 60 watt.i.e., 60 joule of electrical energy is consumed by the appliance in one second.

1b. Power rating as 60W -  150V.

P=60W

V= 150 V

I=?

P=VI

⇒P/V= I

⇒I=P/V

⇒I=60W / 150 V

I= 0.4 A

2. An electric iron of power 1.5 KW is used for 30 minutes to press clothes. Calculate the electrical energy consumed in

a) kilowatt hour

b) joule

Ans. P=1.5 kW

t=30 minutes

  = 30 × 1/ 60  H

P= W/ t

⇒P × t = W

⇒ w = P × t

 ⇒ w= 1.5 kW × 1/2  

⇒ W = 0.75 kWh

2b) 

W= 0.75 kWh

     = 0.75 × 1 kWh

     = 0.75 × 3.6 × 10⁶ J    (  ∵ 1kWh = 3.6 × 10⁶ J )

     = 2.7 × 10⁶ J

3. Assuming the electric consumption per day to be 12 kilowatt hour and the rate of electricity to be rupees 6.25 per unit, find how much money is to be paid in a month of 30 days?

Ans. Energy consumption in one day= 12kWh

Energy consumption in 30 days = 12 kWh ×30

                                                           = 360 kWh

The rate of electricity is to be paid is 6.25 per unit.

Money to be paid in a month= energy consumed × cost of 1 unit

= 360 kWh × ₹ 6.25 / 1kWh

= ₹360× 6.25

= ₹ 2250.0

4. In a premise 5 bulbs each of 100 watt, 2fans each of 60 watt,2 AC s each of 1.5 kilowatt hour used for 5 hour per day.find:

A. Total power consumed per day

B. Total power consumed in 30 days

C. Total electrical energy consumed in 30 days,

D. The cost of electricity at the rate of rupees 6.25 per unit

Ans. Power of one bulb= 100W

∴ power of five bulbs = 5× 100W 

     =500W

Power of one fan= 60W

Power of 2 fan= 60W × 2 

  = 120W

Power of one AC = 1.5 kW

Power of 2 AC = 1.5kW × 2

  = 3.0 kW

  = 3.0 × 1kW

   = 3.0 × 1000W

   = 3000W

 ∴ total power of 5 bulbs 2 fans and 2 AC =500W + 120W + 3000 W

  = 3620 W

Total power consumed in 30 days = power consumed in one day × number of days

  = 3620W × 30 

   = 108600 W

    = 108.6 × 10³ W

    = 108.6 × 1 k W

    = 108.6 kW

Total electrical energy consumed in 30 days = P ×  t

   = 108.6 × 10³ W × 5 h

   = 543 kWh

The cost of electricity at the rate of 6.25 per unit = electrical energy consumed × cost of 1 unit

  = 543 kWh × ₹ 6.25 / 1kWh

   = 543 × ₹ 6.25

   = ₹ 3393.75

= 40 litre.

 = 40× 1 litre

Ans. Mass per unit of a substance is called as its density.

2. Name the SI unit of density. How is it related to gram per centimetre cube?

Ans. The SI unit of density is kg per metre cube ( kgm-³).

It is related to gcm-³ as

1kgm-³= 10-³ gcm-³

3. The density of brass is 8.4 gram per centimetre cube. What do you mean by this statement?

Ans. The density of brass is 8.4 gram per centimetre cube. It means that 8.4 gram of brass occupies a volume of 1 cm cube.

Or 1 centimetre cube of brass has a mass of 8.4 g.

4 . Arrange the following substances in order of their increasing density:

Iron, cork, brass, water, Mercury.

Ans. Iron=7.8gcm-³

Cork=0.25gcm-³

Brass=8.4 gcm-³

Water=1 gcm-³

Increasing order means we have to start from the lowest density to higher density.

Cork < water < iron < brass < Mercury.

Ans.  the density of a liquid can be determined by  using a density bottle.

1. Mass of empty bottle M₁

These masses are measured by using beam balance.

4. The mass of liquid M = M₃ - M₁

5. Volume of liquid. V=M₂ - M₁

6. By using formula of density as,

9. What is a density bottle? How is it used to find the density of a liquid?

Ans. Density bottle is a specially designed bottle  which is used to determine the density of a liquid. The stopper has a narrow hole through which it which allows the excess liquid to drain out.The bottle always contains the same volume of liquid each time when it is filled.

It is is used to find the density of a liquid by measuring mass and volume of the liquid. 

10. Define the term relative density of a substance.

Ans. Relative density of a substance is the ratio of density of a substance to the density of water at 4 degree Celsius. Or,

Relative density of a substance is the ratio of the mass of any volume of the substance to the mass of an equal volume of water.

11. What is the unit of relative density?

Ans.relative density is a unitless quantity. Relative density is a pure, it has no unit.

12. Distinguish between density and relative density.

Ans.1. density of a substance is the mass per unit volume of  that substance. Whereas relative density of a substance is the ratio of density of that substance to the density of water at 4 degree Celsius.

2. Density is expressed in gcm-³ or kgm-³. Whereas relative density has no unit.

Note write these differences in a vertical column method. One side write density  and other side write relative density.

Ans. It means that the density of  aluminium is 2.7 times more than the density of water at 4 degree Celsius.

b) liquid A has  has the least density. Because less the density of liquid,  then larger portion of the floating body is inside the  liquid. By law of floatation the weight of a floating body should be equal to the weight of the liquid displaced by its submerge part.

Weight of the liquid displaced depends on the the volume submerged, density of liquid and acceleration due to gravity.

c) liquid C has the highest density because in that the submerged part of the body is very less .

Ans. Icebergs floating on sea water are dangerous for shipsbecause an iceberg floats in sea water with its large portions  submerged inside the water and only a little portion of it is above the surface of water. Ship can collide with invisible part of iceberg under the surface of water.

Ans. It is easier to lift a stone under water than in air because when the stone is inside the water then a upthrust acts on it which helps us in lifting the load in upward direction. Although upthrust acts in air as well as in water but since the density of water is more compared to the density of air so buoyant force is more in water.

26. What is a submarine?how can it be made to dive in water and come to the surface of water?

Ans.a submarine is a fish shaped water tight- boat provided with several ballast tank in its front and rear parts. It can travel underwater like a ship.

1. To make the submarine dive, the tanks are filled with water so that the average density of the submarine becomes greater than the density of seawater and it sinks.

2. If a submarine is to rise,water from the ballast tanks is forced out into the sea by allowing the compressed air to enter the tank. Now the  average density  of submarine is less than that of sea water. So it it goes up and come to the surface of water.

27. A balloon filled with hydrogen rises in air explain the reason.

Ans. When light gas like hydrogen or helium is filled in a balloon, the weight of air displaced by the inflated balloon (upthrust) a more than the weight of the gas filled balloon and it rises up under the influence of the net upward force.

• volume of a body of irregular shape= volume of liquid displaced by the body when it is immersed completely into the liquid.


• the difference in the final level from the initial level gives the volume of the liquid displacedi.e., V=V₂ -V₁.   V₂=final level ,V₁=initial level.


*Density bottle:
-a density bottle is a specially designed to determine the density of a liquid.
-sometimes it is also called as specific gravity bottle.
-it stores a fixed volume of a liquid.
-the stopper has a narrow hole through which the excess liquid drains out.
-it contains the same volume of liquid when it is filled.
-the volume of bottle is either 25 ml or 50 ml.
*Determination of density of a liquid using a density bottle:

*Relative Density:
-the ratio of density of the substance to density of water is called relative density.or
-relative density is the ratio of the mass of any volume of the substance to the mass of an equal volume of water at 4°C.

R.D=density of the substance/density of water at 4 degree Celsius.
-R.D is a dimensionless quantity because it is the ratio of two same quantities.

*Floating and sinking:
-a body floats on a liquid if its density is less than the density of the liquid, while a body sinks in a liquid if its density is more than the density of the liquid.
-principle of floatation-
-when a body is placed in a liquid then two forces act on it:
1. The weight of the body which axe in vertically downward direction and has a tendency to sink the body.
2. Buoyant force/upthrust acts vertically upwards and it has tendency to move the body up.
Case 1-the weight of body is greater than the buoyant force-the body will sink in the liquid to the bottom under the the influence of the resultant force.
Case 2- the weight of the body is equal to the buoyant force.-the body will float just inside the surface of liquid.
case 3-the weight of the body is less than the buoyant force. Body floats partially submerged in liquid.only that much portion of the body will immerse inside the liquid by which the weight of the liquid displaced balance is the total weight of the body.

*Law of floatation:
- weight of the floating body= weight of the liquid displaced by its immersed part.
-the apparent weight of a floating body is zero.
*Body while floating,sinks deeper in a liquid of low density than in a liquid of high density.

*Some applications of floatation:
1. Floatation of an iron ship-average density of ship is less than the density of water.

2 flotation of man-the weight of a man gets balanced by the less immersed part of his body in sea water as compared to that in river water. Density of seawater is more than the river water because of presence of salt.

3. Floatation of ice on water- 9/10 th part of ice is inside the water & only 1/10 th part of it outside water. Because the density of ice is 0.9gcm-³ & water is 1.0gcm-³.

Melting/fusion-the process of change from solid state to  liquid state by absorption of heat at a constant temperature.
Melting point-the constant temperature at which solid changes into liquid by absorbing heat energy.
•The wax melts at 55 degree Celsius during which heat is supplied, but temperature does not rise. After The melting of whole wax, the temperature begins to rise.energy used in increasing the potential energy of molecules.
*Melting point of ice decreases with increase of pressure on it,but the melting point of wax increases with increase of pressure on it.
*melting point of ice decreases when salt is added to it. This mixture of salt added to Ice is called freezing mixture. It is used for preparing kulfis.
Freezing-the process of change from liquid state to solid state by rejection of heat at a constant temperature.
*Water expands on freezing whereas wax, lead etc., Contract on freezing.
Freezing point-the constant temperature at which liquid changes into solid state by rejecting heat energy.
*Freezing point and melting point are the same.
*Explanation of melting by molecular model-
-on heating a solid,the kinetic energy of molecules increases due to which they begin to vibrate more violently.the molecules acquire sufficient kinetic energy to become far separated from each other by overcoming the forces of attraction between them & gets converted into liquid state.
AT MELTING POINT-the heat energy absorbed by the substance does not change the temperature of the substance,but is utilised in doing work against the forces of attraction in increasing the separation between the molecules that is their potential energy increases.
Boiling/vaporization-the process of change from liquid state to gaseous state by absorption of heat at a constant temperature.
Condensation-the process of change from gaseous state to liquid state by rejection of heat at a constant temperature.
* boiling point and condensation point are same.
*Explanation of vaporization by molecular model-on heating, the average kinetic energy of molecules of liquid increases.the molecules acquire sufficient kinetic energy to overcome the forces of attraction between themselves and they become free to leave the surface,thus converted into gases state.

Sometimes sublimation also takes place without heating. example naphthalene balls (moth balls) which is used to protect clothes, decreases in size with time & becomes small.
Deposition/solidification-process of change from gaseous state to solid state directly by rejection of heat at a constant temperature.
Hidden heat/latent heat-the quantity of heat given to or taken from the substance during the the change of state at a constant temperature.




  • *Evaporation-the change from liquid state to gasses state on absorbing heat energy at all temperatures.
  • *Explanation of evaporation by the molecular model:
  • The molecules are in motion within its boundary and collide with each other. Some molecules below the surface of liquid acquire sufficient kinetic energy to overcome the force of attraction of other molecules and their intermolecular spacing increases such molecules have  to move to the surface of the liquid and they got it from surroundings so as to escape out into the atmosphere with atmospheric air molecules.
  • *Factors affecting rate of evaporation:
  • The temperature of liquid
  • The area of the exposed surface cloth dries up faster if it is spread out than if it is folded up.
  • The nature of liquid-volatile liquid such as alcohol, spirit, ether etc. evaporates much faster than water. The force of attraction among molecules is negligible in volatile liquids . So, they escape out more easily.
  • The flow of air above  the liquid.to cool the milk, we blow air above it. On blowing air,the air molecules take away the liquid molecules from the surface with them and other molecules of the liquid occupy their place. This increases the rate of evaporation.
  • The presence of moisture or humidity.wet clothes dry faster in dry summer days than in rainy season.
  • *Evaporation produces cooling:
  • When a liquid changes into vapour, it requires heat. Heat is supplied by the surroundings of the liquid .this results in fall in temperature in the surroundings.
  • *Applications of evaporation:
  • 1. Water gets cold  in an earthen pot.the heat required for evaporation is taken from water inside the pot.
  • 2. The the strips of wet cloth on the fore head of a patient having high fever. During evaporation water takes heat it from the body of the patient.
  • 3.tea in a saucer, the surface area of tea increases and evaporation becomes faster.
  • 4.sweat from our body helps to maintain the body temperature at 37°C or 98.6°F. when sweat evaporates, it requires heat which. it takes away from our body.
  • The average kinetic energy of molecules of a substance is a measure of its temperature.
